A powerful earthquake was felt in Dhaka and various parts of Bangladesh on 21 November 2025. Reports indicated the quake measured around 5.5 to 5.7 on the Richter scale, with the US Geological Survey recording it at approximately 5.4–5.5 Mw and some local sources citing up to 5.7.
The epicentre was near Madhabdi in Narsingdi district, roughly 30–40 kilometres northeast of Dhaka, at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometres. The shaking lasted around 26 seconds and was strongly felt across the capital, triggering widespread panic as many residents rushed out into the streets.
Tragically, at least five people were killed—though some reports mentioned as many as ten. In old Dhaka areas such as Armanitola, building railings and debris reportedly collapsed, striking pedestrians.
Hundreds of people were injured, with estimates ranging from about 100 to more than 450. Damage to buildings was reported in Dhaka and surrounding districts. Tremors were also felt in parts of eastern India, including Kolkata.
The earthquake was described as one of the strongest felt in the region in recent years, highlighting Dhaka’s vulnerability due to its dense population and the presence of many older, less resilient structures.
Aftershocks followed the main quake, though no significant tsunami risk was reported. Authorities continued monitoring the situation while residents remained cautious in the aftermath.
