The creator of the hugely popular teenage mystery–adventure series Three Detectives, Rakib Hasan, has passed away. He breathed his last on Wednesday afternoon while undergoing treatment at Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.
Dr Mahibullah Khondkar, Vice-Principal of Gonoshasthaya Samajbhittik Medical College, said Rakib Hasan had been receiving regular kidney dialysis at the hospital. He added that the writer came in for dialysis that day but passed away shortly before the procedure could begin.
Rakib Hasan was born on 12 December 1950 in Cumilla. Due to his father’s transferable job, he spent much of his childhood in Feni, where he completed his schooling before enrolling at Cumilla Victoria College.
Although he entered professional life after completing his studies, he struggled to adapt to conventional office work. Eventually, he left his job and devoted himself fully to writing.
His literary career began at Sheba Prokashoni, where he wrote more than four hundred books under his own name as well as various pseudonyms. Early in his career, he translated several world-famous classic works.
Later, he created a number of popular series, including Tarzan, Detective Raju and Reza–Suja. However, it is the Three Detectives series that made him a household name in Bengali children’s literature.
Through the adventures of Justin, Robi and Kishore, he inspired generations of young readers and became an enduring part of many childhood memories.
Though he preferred a private life away from publicity, Rakib Hasan remained deeply loved by his readers and is likely to be remembered through the timeless characters and stories he created.
